Nick Foles accepts, ready to ’embrace’ backup role

Nick Foles’ run as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback came to an end this week when Carson Wentz was cleared for contact and declared good to go for Sunday’s Week 3 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

The reigning Super Bowl MVP opened up this week about being relegated to the backup role and to no surprise demonstrated a team-first attitude about the change.

“Even if you know something is coming, once you’re in it, there is an adjustment,” Foles said Thursday while standing by his locker, via The Inquirer. “But realizing it is about the team, it’s not about the individual. Carson being healthy, and me going to a different role, helping the scout team, doing what I can to help the team, but from a different role. Focus on that, sort of embrace that day to day.”

Foles led the Eagles to a 1-1 record, but the struggles that first appeared in the preseason carried over for the veteran quarterback in Weeks 1 and 2. That said, Foles did do what the Eagles asked of him: Put the team in a position to win.

Foles was asked why he did not push for a trade given the knowledge that at some point Wentz would reassume the starter’s job.

“A lot of people say, ‘Why didn’t you demand this?’ ” Foles said. “Well, that’s just not who I am, and that’s who I don’t want to be. At the end of the day, I want my kids and my daughter, when she gets older, to look back and be proud of her daddy. So, I focus on that with every decision I make.”

Needless to say, Foles has received widespread praise for the manner in which he’s navigated this tough situation and has been credited for making the transition at quarterback a seamless one.

“There’s going to be different feelings that you feel because, at the end of the day, I am a competitor. You want to help your team,” Foles said. “But sometimes being a leader and being in a role, you don’t always have to be on the field to do that.”
